Look for the drainpipe for the main sewer on the outside of your home. Once you have located the drainpipe, loosen the cap. You may have to use a pipe wrench for this. Be sure to have your gloves on during this entire process.
Remove the cap and allow for drainage. Once you have loosened the cap, you will want to stay out of the way. There may be wastewater that has built up around the main line that will need to evacuate. Let the wastewater evacuate entirely before you attempt to fix it.
Feed the auger down into the main drain line. Ensure that you follow all the instructions that came with the auger to make sure that you are using it correctly. Feed the auger down the drain until you feel the clog.
You will want to keep running the auger until you feel that the clog is clear. Make sure you run it long enough to ensure that no debris remains.
Take your water hose and wash down the pipe as well as the auger. This will serve to clean the auger and remove any debris left over from the clog.
While you are finishing up cleaning the main drain, start to pull your auger up. Once you have done so, make sure that you place the drainpipe cap back on, and tighten with your pipe wrench.
Doing these steps will help you to clear your main drain line. If you try this and are unable to get the clog out, you should call your local plumbing professional.
